Origin:
A seedling from the controlled cross 'Thunderchild'
and 'Wijcik made by Dr. David Lane of the Summerland Research
Station. Bylands Nurseries has exclusive rights to these
seedlings. T6 (now called Purple Spire) was selected in 1999 by
Jeffries Nurseries and is a co-release between Bylands and
Jeffries.
Hardiness:
Zone 3 (Canadian and USDA)
Description:
Purple Spire has a columnar tree form
and grows slowly compared to the Rosybloom cultivars currently on
the market today. It produces a low number of pink spring flowers
and few fruit. Its purple foliage is especially obvious in spring
and fall.
Landscape Value:
Purple Spire is noted for
its purple foliage and dwarf, columnar habit. It serves as an
ideal accent tree or summer privacy screen.
