GOLDSPUR® AMUR CHERRY - Prunus maackii 'Jefspur'

Origin: Seedling tree of the introduced species, Amur Cherry. Goldspur is a dwarf selection discovered in Saskatoon, SK. by Dr. Philip Ronald.

Hardiness: Zone 2 (Canadian and USDA)

Growth Rate: Moderate; very short internodes.

Description: A unique selection of Amur Cherry with dense, peach-like foliage. Mature plants of Goldspur®  reach about 15 feet (5 m) in height with a 9 foot (3 m) spread; about half of that for typical Prunus maackii seedlings. Creamy white spring flowers produce compact racemes of tiny black fruit in mid- summer. Goldspur’s golden exfoliating bark is a desirable winter feature.

Landscape Value: Goldspur is a very distinctive tree with its dwarf growth habit and dense, dark-green foliage. Goldspur has shorter racemes of white flowers than Prunus maackii,  followed by tiny black fruit. As one of the first clones of Amur Cherry, it offers uniformity in this underused species. An excellent small tree for the landscape. Resistant to black knot fungal disease.

Propagation Goldspur® is being propagated in tissue culture by Agriforest Biotechnology. Goldspur can also be readily propagated by softwood cuttings. Canadian Plant Breeders Rights #3903 and U.S. Plant Patent #19665. COPF Royalty of $1.00 per plant.
