DISCOVERY®  ELM

  • Botanical name: Ulmus davidiana var. Japonica 'Discovery'

  • Origin: A clonal selection from an open-pollinated population derived by crossing Japanese Elm trees from a Manchurian source growing at the Morden Research Station.

  • Hardiness: Zone 3 (Canadian and USDA)

  • Growth Rate: Medium to fast.

  • Description: Similar in shape to the American Elm but is 30% smaller. Instead of the irregular and broad-shaped crown of other Japanese Elms, Discovery has symmetrical branching. The tree maintains an upright form during the juvenile stage and develops the classic vase-shaped elm crown form as it approaches maturity. Produces an insignificant amount of seed.

  • Landscape Value: Excellent in residential, downtown and parkway plantings, particularly where an upright growth habit and reduced crown spread are required. Well suited to a wide variety of sites.
