Upon receiving any plant
material from us, it is important to remember that
these plants are living and require regular care.
Here are a few tips to ensure your success in the
maintenance of your bare-root and potted plant material.
(1) Do not allow your plants to dry
out. Water thoroughly and regularly. Be very
careful that you do not overwater.
(2) Cover all roots of bare-root
material with moist peat moss or other loose mulch and
keep the plants stored in well sheltered area.
(3) Place newly potted plant material
in a protected area such as a lath house until bud break.
(4) Provide wind protection for
established potted material to minimize drying out and
blow down.
(5) Protect the plant material when
the temperature goes below the freezing point.
(6) Water more frequently when the
temperature rises about 25ºC (77ºF). Black pots and
black fabric absorb heat and will result in an increase
in soil temperature.
(7) Fertilize your potted material in
early June. We have put fertilizer in our pots the
previous April and this will maintain the plant up to
June. Adding a slow release fertilize in early June
will keep your plant material healthy and saleable
throughout the remainder of the season.
